Have you had complications after a surgery that implanted hernia mesh in your body? You might be entitled to compensation.
Hernia Mesh May Create More Problems Than It Solves
A hernia happens when an organ pushes through the muscle or tissue that holds it in place. For example, the lower intestine can push through a weak spot in the abdominal wall.
During surgery to repair a hernia, doctors sometimes use a pelvic mesh made from thin, flexible polypropylene. The mesh can help to support muscles and fatty tissues that are too thin, damaged, or weak for sutures alone.
Unfortunately, polypropylene can trigger an immune response in the body, which can cause more problems than it solves.
Problems Caused by Pelvic Mesh
There are many brands of pelvic mesh on the market. Two of the most common products are:
- C-QUR, by Atrium
- Physiomesh, by Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon
Hernia mesh implants like C-QUR, Physiomesh, and others have been reported to cause serious injuries in the bodies of patients who underwent hernia surgery. These issues include:
- serious infections
- bowel perforations
- blood vessel punctures and erosions
- bowel or intestinal blockage
- mesh adhesion to tissues
- organ damage
- new or recurrent hernias
- mesh migration
- mesh shrinkage
- seroma (fluid build-up under the surface of your skin)
- ongoing pain
- the need for additional surgeries (including one or more revision surgeries and surgery to remove the mesh)
