Paxil
If you have taken Paxil and you have suffered from suicidal or mental trauma you may be entitled to compensation.
Paxil was introduced into the U.S. market in 1992 by SmithKline Beecham, now known as Glaxo SmithKline Corporation and is the ninth best-selling drug in the country. Paxil is an SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) doctor-prescribed medication that has been approved for marketing in the United States to treat depression, panic disorder, social phobia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Up to 85 percent of patients who take Paxil may have some type of withdrawal symptoms when they stop. Many doctors and patients also may not know that to end treatment, levels of the drug should be tapered off while under a doctor's care. Recent research indicates that as many as 70 percent of general practitioners and 30 percent of psychiatrists do not know about the side effects of ending serotonin-boosting drugs.
The two main side effects associated with Paxil are a risk of birth defects and injury, and suicide and/or mental trauma.
Risk of Birth Defects & Injury
There is a significant increase in the risk of birth defects when taking Paxil during pregnancy, according to a recently released FDA study linking the two. As a result, GlaxoSmithKline Inc. issued a warning to physicians that the drug may increase the risk for birth defects.
The letter stated that there was no conclusive evidence to support whether children born with cardiovascular defects resulted from the mother taking Paxil. However, it was determined through the study that the babies influenced by Paxil were more likely to have a birth defect than the national average. As a result, all future Paxil labels will contain a birth defect warning.
Physicians are being cautioned to weigh the potential risks and benefits of Paxil for women during pregnancy and to discuss their findings as well as alternative treatment plans with their patients.
Suicide / Mental Trauma
Recently a jury in a wrongful death suit awarded $8 Million to relatives of a patient taking Paxil who committed suicide and killed 3 others. The charges in this case were that SmithKline Beecham (Glaxo SmithKline Corporation) has know since 1990 that Paxil can produce suicidal and homicidal reactions in a small number of people and failed to provide adequate warnings to doctors or on their label about this reaction. The charges also claimed that Glaxo Smithkline Corporation (GSK) did not adequately test for the risk of such reactions.
Suicide associated with Paxil can be the result of recent ingestion (particularly during the first few weeks of treatment initiation or dosage increase) or trying to stop the drug. There are reports of suicides occurring when people are trying to stop taking Paxil.
It is the responsibility of drug manufacturers to properly warn
the medical community and general public about dangers associated with their
products.
It seemed clear that some people that went on the drugs had no major problems, but equally clear that others who went on the drug [Paxil/Seroxat] ended up more restless, in a state of mental turmoil, complaining about dreams, nightmares, and a range of things like this. These don’t seem to have been explored further in any great detail.”
