Zicam Warning: Nasal Products Can Destroy Your Sense Of Smell

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned consumers to stop using the over-the-counter nasal cold remedy Zicam. The reason: it can permanently damage your sense of smell.

On June 16, 2009, the FDA ordered Zicam's manufacturer, Matrixx Initiatives Inc., to stop marketing its intranasal products, which contain zinc.

The manufacturer claims its Zicam products reduce the duration of common cold symptoms. But scientists believe zinc may damage nerves in the nose needed for smell -- and dozens of Zicam users apparently have been injured.

If you believe Zicam has damaged your sense of smell, you should ask your doctor to give you an examination. You may also have a claim against Matrixx Initiatives. Call the experienced drug injury team at Brown & Crouppen at 1-888-891-2022 or use our online form for a free consultation about your legal rights.

The FDA says more than 130 consumers have developed anosmia, or a loss of smell, associated with using these Zicam products:

  • Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel;
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs;
  • Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size.

Because these three products were “homeopathic,” they were not subject to the rigorous testing that the FDA requires of most pharmaceuticals. Nor were the products subject to FDA rules requiring warnings of side effects.

We depend on our sense of smell. This important sense helps us enjoy food, is associated with pleasant memories, and, most of all, warns us of dangers, such as smoke or gas leaks.

While Matrixx Initiatives was under no FDA obligation to test its drugs or warn consumers of side effects, that doesn't exempt it from its legal duty to market a safe product. If you've lost your sense of smell after using Zicam nasal products, you may be entitled to compensation.

It’s really terrible to read about a prescription drug being recalled because of dangerous side effects, when you’re one of the people taking it. That’s what happened to me a few years ago. I suffer from a chronic disease and my doctor prescribed a drug to help me manage it better. After being on the drug for a while I began to feel weak and reported it to my doctor. I can’t say enough good things about him, he saved my life. He realized that my problems were being caused not by my disease but by the prescription drug that was supposed to be helping me.    CONTINUE
