Yaz/Yasmin (drosperinone & ethinyl estradiol) is a hormonal contraceptive administered orally to prevent pregnancy. The Food and Drug Administration has also approved the drug for treatment of premenstrual dysphoric disorder and moderate acne. In August 2009, research was released indicating the progestin used in Yaz brings an increased risk of potentially deadly blood clots.

Like many modern oral contraceptives, Yaz uses a combination of progestin and estrogen to prevent ovulation. However, Yaz uses a unique form of progestin called drosperinone that has recently been linked to increased risk of dangerous blood clots. European researches reported findings in August 2009 that women taking oral contraceptives containing drosperinone faced a 6.3 times greater risk of blood clots. Yaz and Yasmin both contain 3 mg of drospirenone but contain different amounts of ethinyl estradiol, the drug's estrogen component.
Blood clots pose a potentially life threatening risk because they can travel through the body's circulatory system and cause severe damage to the brain, heart and lungs, leading to heart attack, stroke and pulmonary embolism.
The progestin in Yaz and Yasmin can also cause hyperkalemia, an elevated level of potassium in the blood. In severe cases, hyperkalemia can cause cardiac artythmia and sudden death.
The drug's manufacturer, Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc., has twice received warning letters from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for failing to warn consumers of the dangers associated with the drug. In October 2008, the FDA sent Bayer a warning letter in response to television commercials promoting Yaz. The commercials, according to the letter, violated the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act by minimizing the “serious risks associated with use of the drug.” Additionally, the commercials suggested Yaz could be used to treat symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome, a treatment for which the drug was not granted approval by the FDA.
The following year, in March 2009, the FDA again wrote to Bayer concerning advertisements that failed to warn consumers of dangers associated with Yaz. In this case, Bayer's online advertisements for Yaz violated the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act by failing to provide information about health risks associated with the drug.
The health risks associated with Yaz and Yasmin are serious. Blood clots and hyperkalemia can both produce life-changing injuries and require extended hospitalization. Medical expenses for treatment of these conditions can be enormous. However, it may be possible to receive financial compensation if you or a loved has been injured or sickened as a result of taking Yaz or Yasmin.
