The FDA's August 2009 announcement indicted that federal drug safety officials had received at least 32 reports of severe liver problems associated with Xenical and Alli, an over-the-counter orlistat drug. Of those 32 patients, 27 required hospitalization and 6 suffered liver failure, a life-threatening condition that requires urgent medical care.
Unfortunately, liver problems are not the only health risks associated with Xenical.
Early orlistat studies linked the drug to an increased incidence of breast cancer, and in lab animals, orlistat has been shown to cause precursors to colon cancer. Xenical works by inhibiting the absorption of fat during the digestive process, thereby reducing the absorption of calories. This method also inhibits the absorption of essential fat-soluble vitamins and nutrients, such as vitamins A, D, E, K and beta-carotene. According to the manufacturer and federal drug officials, Xenical patients must take daily vitamin supplements to avoid potentially dangerous vitamin and nutrient deficiencies.
Other side effects of Xenical, according to manufacturer, include:
Hives;
Rash;
Itching;
Difficulty breathing or swallowing;
Severe or continuous abdominal pain;
Pain or discomfort in the rectum;
Stomach pain;
Irregular menstrual periods;
Headache;
Anxiety;
Gas with oily spotting;
Urgent need to have a bowel movement;
Loose stools;
Oily or fatty stools;
Increased number of bowel movements;
Difficulty controlling bowel movements.
The August 2009 notice from the Food and Drug Administration regarding liver problems among Xenical users urged patients to look for signs of liver failure. Signs of liver failure can include brown urine, loss of appetite, abdominal pain and vomiting, stomach pain, weakness and jaundice, the yellowing of the skin or eyes.
